📖 What is Freesound?

A collaborative sound archive run by Spain's Pompeu Fabra University, offering free downloads of over 730,000 sounds contributed by users worldwide. Licenses range from CC0 and CC BY to non-commercial-only terms, so you must check the license on every file. The interface is English-only, and downloading requires a free account.

💡 When to Use It

Useful when you need ambient sounds or unusual effects that ordinary sound-effect sites don't have — street noise, rain, machinery, or short retro-game-style SFX, sourced from contributors around the world. It's also good for filling in a one-off sound for video editing or a stream segment at no cost. Since licenses vary by file, monetized channels are better off sticking to CC0 or commercially licensed assets.

🚀 How to Use

  1. Step 1: Create a free account on Freesound and enter English keywords for the sound you want in the search box. Specific words like "applause," "keyboard," "rain," or "notification" work best.
  2. Step 2: Play through the search results and check the length, audio quality, and how much noise is present. Narrow the results by tags, license type, or file format if needed.
  3. Step 3: Always check the license before downloading. CC0 is the easiest to work with, CC BY requires attribution, and non-commercial licenses like CC BY-NC should be avoided on monetized streams.
  4. Step 4: Add the downloaded sound to an OBS media source, your streaming software's sound-effect pad, or your video editor. Normalize files with large volume differences beforehand.
  5. Step 5: When using an asset that requires attribution, note the creator's name, the asset URL, and the license in your video description or stream page. Keeping a list of the sounds you've used makes them easier to track down later.
