📖 What is Composite Blur (OBS Plugin)?

A free OBS plugin that adds high-quality blur filters. Add "Composite Blur" from a source's filter list and choose between four algorithms — Gaussian, Box, Dual Kawase and Pixelate — along with Area, Directional, Zoom, Motion and Tilt-Shift effects. An Effect Mask limits the blur to a rectangle or a circle, and setting a Background Source composites it cleanly against whatever sits underneath. Works on Windows, macOS and Linux.

💡 When to Use It

When an email address or account ID is visible in a browser or game capture, an Effect Mask set to Rectangle blurs just that corner of the screen. On a work-along stream you can keep reference material on screen while making the body text unreadable. It works for presentation too: an Area blur softens a camera background so your character art and captions stand out, and a Zoom blur over the game capture pushes a collab partner's camera into the spotlight.

🚀 How to Use

1. Step 1: Open the GitHub releases page (FiniteSingularity/obs-composite-blur) and download the Windows, macOS or Linux installer from Assets (on Flatpak OBS, run flatpak install flathub com.obsproject.Studio.Plugin.CompositeBlur).
2. Step 2: Close OBS before installing, then restart it and check that Composite Blur appears under the "+" for Effect Filters when you right-click a source and open "Filters".
3. Step 3: Add Composite Blur to the source you want blurred, then set Blur Algorithm (Gaussian / Box / Dual Kawase / Pixelate), Blur Type (Area / Directional / Zoom / Motion / Tilt-Shift) and Blur Radius.
4. Step 4: To hide only part of the screen, set Effect Mask to Rectangle or Circle and adjust its position and Feathering; when layering over another source, set Background Source for Compositing to the background so no colour halo appears at the edges.
5. Step 5: Check GPU load against image quality in the preview before you go live, and switch to a lighter algorithm such as Dual Kawase if it is too heavy.
