📖 What is Input Overlay (OBS Plugin)?

An OBS plugin that adds a source showing your keyboard, mouse and gamepad input in real time. Keys light up as you press them, mouse movement and the scroll wheel are reproduced, and controller sticks and triggers are shown as well. Use the official preset layouts as they are, or build your own button placement and artwork with the bundled io-cct config tool. It also supports a WebSocket remote connection so a gaming PC can send its input to a separate streaming PC. Free and open source (GPL-2.0) for Windows and Linux; macOS is not supported.

💡 When to Use It

Great for FPS and action game streams where you want viewers to see exactly which keys you are pressing. Showing your aim work and recoil control on screen makes your decisions far easier to explain. Fighting game combo breakdowns and rhythm game streams benefit too, since the stick and button inputs stay visible as artwork and you do not need a physical hand cam. It also works as a small keyboard display tucked into the corner of a typing or work-along stream.

🚀 How to Use

  1. Step 1: Download the input-overlay Windows installer (.exe) or the Linux .deb from the GitHub releases page, and grab presets.zip while you are there.
  2. Step 2: Close OBS and run the installer (for a manual install, copy the obs-plugins and data folders from the zip over your OBS root folder). Windows needs the Visual C++ Redistributables, and Streamlabs OBS is not supported.
  3. Step 3: Restart OBS and add Input Overlay from the source "+" menu. In its properties, pick a texture (.png file) and a config (.json file) from the presets, and the keyboard or controller artwork appears.
  4. Step 4: For a mouse overlay, set Mouse sensitivity and Mouse deadzone; for a gamepad overlay, select your controller with Gamepad id and Reload gamepads, then press some inputs to confirm it responds.
  5. Step 5: To design your own layout, arrange buttons, sticks and wheel elements in the bundled io-cct (Config Creation Tool), export the .json and .png, and load them in the properties from Step 3.
